It is not common knowledge yet that traditional insulation material in a ventilated basement attracts moisture that can damage a wooden floor. This can even happen in basements that initially appear perfectly dry. The problem is caused by the low temperature of the bottom of the insulation material. In summertime warm humid air enters the basement from outside and cools down against the cold insulation material, building up condensation. Moisture vaporizing from the soil aggravates the problem. Insulation on top of the floor is no solution because the same phenomenon occurs here as well. Because of the decreasing heat flow the underside of the planks gets colder and condensation can easily happen as shown in the photo opposite.

It is a good thing that there is an insulation material on the market now that remains dry even on warm humid summer days. This material is a Dutch development called Thermocushion. The Thermocushion is a foldable insulation material which encloses air inside airtight compartments. The cushions are made of a very strong synthetic foil with reflecting surfaces on both sides which are protected against oxidation. This foil weighs only 17g sq.m. Therefore the heat capacity is so small that the foil immediately takes over the temperature of the air flowing by. The outside air does not cool down so condensation does not take place at all. However the important thing is that moisture evaporating from the soil should be prevented as well to ensure a long lasting wooden floor. Therefore Tonzon has created a rugged ground sheet to eliminate this source of humidity. This groundsheet is a proven barrier against radioactive radon gas as well.

For over 18 years now this unique system has given superb insulation, (U-value down to 0.28 W/sq.m K) and has created no problems with wooden floors. In fact wooden floors get much warmer and so dry the spores of the destructive fungus on the photo opposite, (Serpula Lacrimans) do not find a breeding ground. The Dutch consumer organisation considers the Thermocushion as "The best buy" and research from Nibe (Netherlands Institute for Building-Biology and Ecology) shows that the Thermocushions are very environmentally friendly.. In comparison with other insulation materials, Thermocushions have by far the lowest environmental load.
